About Polis Inventory

The Polis Inventory app plots the 1035 ancient Greek Poleis identified in the pioneering classical work published as "An Inventory of Archaic and Classical Poleis" by M.H Hansen and T. Nielsen. Meant to act as a companion to this work, the app allows you to spatially visualize and explore the Poleis on an interactive map. First published in 2005, the Inventory was compiled over a 10-year period by a cross disciplinary team organized by the Copenhagen Polis Center.

Use the app to view the location of each Polis superimposed on a vibrant and detailed satellite map. Each Polis possesses a description that consists of many physical and historically relevant parameters.

You can search for and locate a Polis by name. You can also apply a variety of parameters filters to narrow down the dataset and explore it in more detail. A description of each parameter is provided, and further references are cited.

This digitized version of the Inventory data presented here was subsequently compiled by other classical scholars and is now maintained by faculty and students from the Stanford University Classics Department where this dataset, largely derived from the original Inventory, is publicly available. Following this spirit, you can freely download it from this app as well.

It is hoped this app will facilitate further scholarship and learning and be a fun and informative source of information about the ancient Greek world for students and travelers alike.

Privacy Policy: Polis Inventory does not track or store user data and user interaction data of any kind, either directly or indirectly.
