The United States Coast Guard (USCG) Marine Radio Operator Permit (MP) is a certification required for certain mariners who operate radiotelephone stations aboard vessels that sail in the waters of the United States. The permit is issued by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and is necessary for those who operate radiotelephone stations on certain vessels that are required to carry radio equipment, including ships of more than 300 gross tons, vessels carrying more than six passengers for hire in the open sea or any tidewater area of the United States, and towing vessels of more than 26 feet in length.
To obtain a USCG Marine Radio Operator Permit, applicants must pass the FCC examination for a Marine Radio Operator Permit (MP). The examination tests the applicant's knowledge of radio regulations, operating procedures, and basic radio technology.
