Before we developed our creative plan for this room - the color palette, the style, the layout, the furnishings - we helped this family reclaim the purpose for this room. It had been sort of a dining room/music room/leftover furniture room. In one corner there was a drum set, in the other a favorite old armchair, in the middle a big table with bench seating. â â

Our clients didn't know what to do with the space. They didn't love the idea of a true dining room because they are a casual family who doesn't like the idea of anything too precious or any spaces unused but for 3 times a year. So, instead, we created an everyday, family meal space. Sure...sounds a lot like "dining room", but the idea is that it is used every night. It might not be a table literally in the kitchen, but it's about 2 steps from the kitchen and the plan was to treat it as if it were part of an eat-in kitchen. â â

To make this happen, we kept things fun and casual. The bright rug is 100% wool (easily cleaned) and red to hide all the marina spills. The side chairs have a wipeable leather seat and the host chairs have a blue, performance fabric seat cushion. The oval shaped table allows for all the friends and family to pull up a chair and squish in. The window treatments are simple to keep it casual and highlight the star of the room - all the amazing natural light. â â

And now, a month or so living with their "new" room, the family uses it every evening for dinner. Sure, snacks are at the kitchen island, but family meals are in the dining room. â â
