… the regal, colourful, almost medieval dining room of Casa Amatller, filled with the works of the best artisans of the late 1800s such as the sculptor Eusebi Arnau, about whose fireplace sculpture we will learn next week. But the most peculiar thing about the dining room is that unlike in other bourgeois homes of the time, it does not face the posh main boulevard, but the inner patio of the block. This is because it used to open up to an immense garden through a grand staircase, creating a peaceful, natural ambience, right in the city away from the bustle of Passeig de Gràcia. As was common in Catalan modernista buildings, in this masterpiece of the architect Puig i Cadafalch, we can see clear references to the medieval period, one of prosperity and abundance for Catalonia, and hence a source of pride that manifests itself time and again. Over the next week or so, we will explore its interior right here, find out how the dining hall was placed unusually, and learn the history behind the name of the block. Stay tuned!
