It’s no secret that the Jeanneret chairs have gained momentum in recent years. You might’ve seen them in Kourtney Kardashian’s dining room, as featured in @archdigest , or in one of the plenty furniture stores that carry a replica.
The chair’s origin dates back to the 1950’s, when architect Le Corbusier was building a utopian city in Chandigarh, India. He hired his cousin, iconic Swiss designer, Pierre Jeanneret, to design the furniture for the city. This would include seating for schools, administrative buildings, etc. Shifting away from mid-century design, the city began to get rid of the scrap chairs, which would be sold in auctions for only a few rupees.
Fast forward to the present, the original chairs now sell for tens of thousands of dollars— but just like any original, buyers must be aware of potential fakes that are claiming to be originals. What’s your take on the design?
